Healing Timeline

Days 1–14: The Healing Phase

  • Wash gently 2x a day with fragrance-free soap (Dove, Dial Free & Clear, or similar)

  • Pat dry, never rub

  • Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or tattoo balm (Lubriderm, Aquaphor, or Hustle Butter) 2–3x a day

  • Let it breathe as much as possible

  • Wear loose, soft clothing over the area

What to expect: Peeling, flaking, and itching are all normal. Your tattoo may look dull or patchy during healing — this is temporary.

What to Avoid

  • No sun exposure on the tattoo while healing, sunscreen after it's fully healed

  • No swimming in pools, oceans, lakes, and hot tubs until fully healed (at least 3–4 weeks)

  • No picking or scratching

  • No soaking, quick showers only, no baths

  • No tight clothing rubbing directly on the tattoo

First 24 Hours

Your artist will cover your tattoo with either a bandage or a second-skin/saniderm wrap.

  • Saniderm/second-skin wrap — leave it on for 3–5 days. It's normal to see fluid, ink, and blood pooling underneath. As long as the seal isn't broken, leave it alone. When you remove it, do so in the shower under warm running water — peel slowly from the edges.

  • Regular bandage — remove after 2–4 hours. Wash immediately with clean hands, fragrance-free soap, and lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

Long-Term Care

  • Once fully healed (4–6 weeks), keep your tattoo looking its best by:

  • Moisturizing regularly

  • Applying SPF 30+ sunscreen whenever it's exposed to sun

  • Staying hydrated — healthy skin holds ink better

When To Get In Touch

  • Normal healing includes redness, swelling, and tenderness in the first 2–3 days. Contact us or a medical professional if you notice:

  • Excessive swelling, heat, or pain after day 3

  • Pus or discharge (not clear fluid)

  • Red streaking around the tattoo

  • Fever

  • Signs of allergic reaction include hives, rash, or severe itching beyond the tattoo area — seek medical attention promptly.
